SIX YARDS of sheer grace and elegance is what the sari is all about. A Sari is one of the most elegant attires a woman can adorn. It is essentially an un-stitched long piece of fabric which needs to be draped in a particular way to achieve the fully dressed effect. Draping a sari is an art. The saree is worn in in different ways in different states of India. However, the most common method is wrapping the cloth around the waist, making pleats in the front and draping the final length around the shoulder. The remaining fabric that is draped over her blouse and shoulder, falling behind her is called the pallu.

Before you Start

A blouse which needs to be tight-fitting and whose color needs to be chosen keeping the look of the saree in mind, can be short sleeved or sleeveless, with a variety of necklines. The blouse ends just below the bust.
Wearing a Sari the Traditional Way

* Step 1. Around your body. Starting at the navel, tuck the plain end of the saree into the petticoat and continue tucking till you take a complete turn from right to left. Adjust the lower end of the saree to the height required. Ideally wear your footwear so that you drape the saree to the right length.

* Step 2. Measuring the pallu. Hold the top edge of the saree where the pallu is and bring it around your hips to the front and over your left shoulder, thus measuring the length of the pallav or pallu. The pallav should hang down the back to the knee. You may pin your pallu to your sari blouse provisionally.

* Step 3. Making pleats. Create pleats with the saree. Make about 7 to 10 pleats and hold them up together so that they fall straight and even. Tuck the pleats into the waist petticoat slightly to the left of the navel, taking care to see that the pleats are turned towards the left.

* Step 4. The pallu. The remaining portion of the saree must be turned once around the body and then draped over the left shoulder. Arrange the pleats on this part of the saree and then pin them up on the left shoulder to prevent the pallu from falling off.

This is the most common method to wear a saree. With matching bindi and jewellery you feel like a complete Indian woman.
Different Ways of Wearing a Sari

Different regions of India have their own distinct forms of draping a Saree. Some of these are outlined below:

Gujarati way: This version of draping, ccommonly known as the seedha pallu way, is also found in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar. Instead of opening to the left, the pleats are tucked so that they open to the right. Then, the pallu is taken to the back and brought over the right shoulder. It is then spread across the chest, and the left edge is tucked in the petticoat at the back.

Maharashtra method: Instead of the usual five-and-a-half meters, the sari in this version measures eight meters. One portion of the sari is drawn up between the legs and tucked in behind at the waist, while another portion is draped as a pallu over the bosom. Thus it forms a kind of divided sari, allowing greater freedom of movement.

Tamilian version: Like the Maharashtra version, the sare in this version, too, measures eight meters. After wrapping around the waist, the pleats are positioned along the left leg. The rest of the sari is taken over the left shoulder, wrapped once again round the waist and tucked on the left side.

Bengali style: The saree is worn pleatless; it is wrapped around the waist, brought back to the right side and the pallu is thrown over the left shoulder. The pallu is then brought up under the right arm and once again cast over the left shoulder.

There is something very positive about living and working in isolation of the rest of the world, you have to learn to rely on your own resources, innovate and collaborate with other like minded individuals, both local and international, think local act global. And with the aid of modern electronic communication systems you can succeed globally from your desktop.

In 2008 I relocated me business to my home town Perth Western Australia, primarily because it suited lifestyle needs and wants. Great Whether, fresh food, multicultural and for a designer like who is in constant creative mood there is an endless supply of natural and man made inspiration.

I had spent eight years in England, the last five studying and working in fashion.

So began a new adventure filled with risk and challenge, just what I needed ample amounts of mental stimulation to keep me actively motivated and in tune my compass.

I had discovered the fashion industry, which now allows me to express my creative imagination with complete freedom, a position I had been preparing and working towards all of my long life.

My intention was to live a comfortable quiet lifestyle and at the same time delve into the manic ever changing world of fashion, but without having to venture far and wide. And from the most isolated city in the world continue to launch my unique men’s designer fashion accessories. With a no compromise attitude, broke, but high on motivation and happy at home I began scouring the city and suburbs for talented designers to join in exciting collaborative projects, it begins to bear fruit with the first range of cufflinks due to be released in October.

It took almost two years just to make the right connections and there are more in the pipeline. Attending networking functions and seminars, endless hour’s cold calling, working thirty six hours a week in fashion retail, running an online shopping service, designing, pounding the pavement, door knocking, absorbing countless knock backs, living hand to mouth, day by day.  I must have worked 70 hours a week for almost two years. For the first time in my life I am without a car so rely on my legs to do the walking and busses and trains, I must average about ten hours on hoof a week.

Starting at 7am with network breakfasts, then meetings with shop owners, coffees with prospective designers, then onto the floor in front line sales until 9pm. Finally, arriving home and working for another 2 hours, preparing orders, answering emails, and planning for the next day; Driven by sheer passion to succeed in my dreams, wishes and goals, these three intangibles are fuel for the fire.

Now a number of fashion boutiques that stock my designer silk ties and cufflinks, as well as a few multi national corporate clients, a little good press, plus an agent to service the east coast of Australia there is a shimmer of light at the end of a long black tunnel. New Zealand is the next challenge, securing and agent or licensee agreement; then it’s USA, Japan and China.

But without secure and reliable collaborations both local and global progress is not possible.

Welcome to the home of finely crafted designer ties and cufflinks handmade from fine Italian and English silks.

Question by Jourdan: What are the chances of becoming a successful fashion designer?
I’m almost 17, and I’m home schooled, so i take fashion design at a local community college. I already have professional sewing skills, and i can use professional sewing equipment, like sergers, ect.. and i was wondering if this a plus since i have started so much earlier then the average wanna be fashion designer?

Also, what does it take to be a fashion designer? The clothes I make are inspired by the 60′s pop art , the 80′s, and some vintage styles. I like to make clothes that are really fashionable but wearable too, and i have made some handbags. Is that good enough or should i be more creative?

And where can I buy wholesale fabric and other sewing notions like zippers, buttons, thread, ect.

Any other info would be wonderful!

i don’t know– it might be tricky but you can still do it! Follow your dreams :D

Give your answer to this question below!

So, you now have a number of media relations, stories and hooks that you can present to various media outlets that don’t have a thing to do with celebrities.  Using this approach, you and your fashions are the stars.  This is the approach I suggest focusing on.  Then after you’ve made your splash and established yourself through the media as a hot designer, maybe, just maybe you’ll let one of those celebrities wear them.

Public relations is an important marketing component for nearly any company or product, but when it comes to fashion, beauty or style an effective PR campaign is not an option, it’s a necessity.  Think about it, fashion and style is directly linked in our culture with celebrity and fame.  When Entertainment Tonight or In Style feature the latest singing sensation or movie star, it’s not just the person who is being spotlighted it’s also what he or she is wearing including what bag, jewelry, blouse, pants, skirt, scarf or coat they are sporting at the time.

When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt prance down the red carpet, they’re not the only ones being scrutinized, the magnifying glass is also on their shoes, their blouse, the sunglasses – everything they are wearing is now suddenly in the grip of the star making machine.

A fashion designer we were working with had one of her designs worn by Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson in the same week.  That opened the door to the People magazines and In Style’s of the world.  That is a definite plus.  As a designer you want celebrities to wear your clothing.  It helps media-wise, there is no doubt about that.  But a mistake that designers often make is that they place their primary focus on chasing down celebrities and celebrity stylists thinking that the only way to establish themselves in the world of fashion is to get the latest A, B, C (and if all else fails) D-list celebrity to wear their designs.

As I mentioned, that helps, but your primary job is not to chase down Hollywood’s latest flavor of the month.  Your job is to create the best fashions you can.  You want to develop a line that the public reacts to.  The bottom line is you want your creations to be your star, not the celebrity that wears them.  So, how do you do this?

Here’s your exercise, forget (for a bit) that celebrities exist. Put aside your desire to have the latest celeb wear your designs.  For now, that approach is off the table.  Now, what are your stories?  What makes your designs special?  Who are they created for?  What are some ways that they can be used or worn that is a bit different? What are some interesting visuals that can be used when pitching your fashion story? Is there a story that has to do with how your fashions are made?  Are unique materials used?  Keep drilling down this way.  Focus on what makes your designs unique, different or what makes them perfect for a certain target market.

Now what about you?  What makes your story interesting?  What was your journey to become a designer?  What obstacles did you have to overcome?  How was your life changed by your decision to enter the world of fashion? Realize that your journey and your transformation offers you a wealth of media pitches and approaches.

So, you now have a number of media pitches, stories and hooks that you can present to various media outlets that don’t have a thing to do with celebrities.  Using this approach, you and your fashions are the stars.  This is the approach I suggest focusing on.  Then after you’ve made your splash and established yourself through the media as a hot designer, maybe, just maybe you’ll let one of those celebrities wear them.

Chloe – Fashion Designer Profile
You may not have heard of Gaby Aghion, but chances are that you have seen some of her work. In 1952 Gaby Aghion decided to create a French fashion house located in Paris. She named the line Chloe, and since its inception it has been turning out some of the most luxurious ready to wear garments out there.
Gaby Aghion lived in Paris which is why she chose to star their brand there. However, she was actually of Egyptian origin. Her exotic background is a large part of her sense of style. Along with her partner, Jacques Lenoir, Gaby noticed that there was a great interest and need for a fashion house that could offer ready to wear garments that met the stringent requirements of haute couture garments. Thus Chloe was born.
The Chloe line was not like the other lines of the time. In fact, Gaby Aghion fought against the formality of traditional 1950′s fashion. She decided to create top quality, luxurious, soft, figure flattering clothes. Each creation that she made was designed in the best fabrics available. She referred to this as “luxury prt–porter” which is where the ready to wear market evolved from.
The Chloe line was quickly imitated by other couturiers like Givenchy, and today ready to wear lines are much more common and important than haute couture lines. In 1966 Chloe had an important change happen. That was the year that Karl Lagerfeld was brought on as its main designer, and he helped to skyrocket Chloe to becoming one of the most important brands of the 1970′s. Iconic figures like Jackie Kennedy, Brigitte Bardot, and Grace Kelly were regularly seen wearing Chloe garments.
In the mid 1980′s Chloe again underwent a large change. It was in 1985 that the Richemont group acquired Chloe, but they were smart enough to keep on Karl Lagerfeld. Through the years Chloe continued to change with the influence of its designers. In 1997 Stella McCartney joined the design team bringing with her a much more feminine and romantic feel. Just four years later Phoebe Philo joined Chloe bringing a personal sense of sensuality to the line that attracted the interests of celebrities like Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst.
Not long after that Chloe branched out into the world of accessories. In 2002 Chloe released its first line of bags and shoes. Their most popular piece from this collection was The Paddington bag which gained a lot of attention as it became the “it bag” of the year. As the years continued to pass changes continued to occur, and in 2009 Chloe found a spokesperson in fashion forward actress Chloe Sevigny.
Chloe garments can be found in a variety of boutiques worldwide. They have locations in Paris, London, New York, Dubai, and Tokyo just to name a few. Additionally, you can also find their garments in some of the higher quality retailers and luxury boutiques. However, Chloe has stayed true to its roots with its headquarters located in Paris, France.

MILAN (Reuters Life!) – Italian fashion designers created shimmering, fluid looks for their 2011 spring/summer collections, mixing fringes and lengths to seduce women as conscious of their bodies as of their money.

Crystal embroideries, golden belts and mirror heels shone at the Milan shows ended on Tuesday. A longer calendar and a new central location attracted more buyers than last year, confirming signs of recovery for luxury good brands.

“Buyers increased to over 15,000 this year, with more coming from Asia and the United States,” Mario Boselli, president of Italy’s National Chamber of Fashion, said on Tuesday.

“There was more vigor, also because of the improved economic situation after the crisis,” he said.

Fashion houses Cavalli and Ferragamo said sales continued to rise in the third quarter, but kept a cautious outlook for the rest of 2010, as many see 2011 as a test year for recovery.

A relaxed, sensual elegance inspired Dolce&Gabbana, whose bride-to-be models wore white clothes made from bed linens and tablecloths in a tribute to Italy’s best sartorial tradition.

Crystals were sewn on long-slung robes, like those seen at Armani, whose blue collection was inspired by desert nomads.

“I wanted very sexy clothes, but wearable,” Armani told reporters after his glittering, linear show.

His models wore iridescent fabrics, while trousers were topped by tunics, creating a layered silhouette.

“Buyers ask for things they can sell… Not all women are mannequins,” Armani said, adding demand for evening dresses was rising, as people seek special clothes for their full wardrobes.

Roberto Cavalli celebrated his 40th anniversary in the fashion world with a sexy, glitzy-rock collection, which featured free-flowing fringes on pants, necklaces and bags.

Glamour was also synonymous with celebrities.

If British model Naomi Campbell celebrated in tears at Dolce&Gabbana her 25th anniversary in the business, American actor George Clooney enjoyed with his Italian girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis his return to fashion’s red carpet at Armani.

Prada proved again that not all women are made equal with a “minimal Baroque” collection, with simple forms in vivid colors and round-shouldered striped dresses.

Versace explored a sophisticated, sexy look, with short jackets revealing a line of skin and the house’s Greek fret on clothes and bags, some of which mixed metal with crystals.

For the evening, Gucci’s designer Frida Giannini showed off tuxedo one-pieces or totem dresses with crystals or feathers.

Woven python strips and crystal-embroidered gowns took center stage at Gianfranco Ferre’s show.

Milan hands the baton to Paris for the last fashion week of the year.

Do you have a love for fashion?  Whether you make your own clothes or fashion accessories or if you regularly find yourself giving fashion advice to those that you know, have you ever thought about a career in fashion?  If you haven’t, you may want to take the time to do so.  Despite the common myth that a career in fashion is one that is difficult to obtain, it is more than possible with the right amount of willpower and the need to succeed.

When it comes to having a career in fashion, many individuals wonder exactly what they can do. The good thing about fashion is that there are a number of fashion focused jobs and careers out there. Some of these jobs involve working for someone else, like another company, but there are also opportunities out there where you can start your own business and be your own boss.  If you would like to know more about some of the many careers in fashion that you may be able to have, you will want to read on.

One of the most popular and sought after careers in fashion is that of a fashion designer.  Fashion designers are individuals who design clothing and fashion accessories, like jewelry or handbags.  Many fashion designers start out small by making clothes and fashion accessories for themselves and their friends, but many later decide to start selling their own fashions. What is nice about being a fashion designer is that you can continue to make your own clothes or you can hire a manufacturer to do it for you.  You may also want to think about selling your own clothes either locally or online.

Speaking of selling the clothes or fashion accessories that you may have designed, that leads to another fashion career.  One other fashion career that you may be interested in is being the owner and operator of a fashion store.  Fashion stores come in all different size, shapes, and styles. There are some fashion stores that focus on a particular type of clothing, like elegant evening wear, and others who offer all different types of fashions for all different individuals, like men, women, and children.  You also have the option of selling your own designs, if you are fashion designer, or buying other designers products to sell inside your stores, whether they are online stores, offline stores, or both.

Another fashion career that may be of interest to you is a fashion consultant.  Fashion consultants are individuals who advise or consult with their customers on the latest in fashion trends. The clients of fashion consultants are often ones who are unsure about what to wear for a new job, a job interview, an elegant dinner, a wedding, or another important event.  If you have a love for fashion, enjoy keeping up with the latest in fashion news and trends, and enjoy giving fashion advice to those that you know, you may want to look into a career as a fashion consultant.

Another one of the many careers in fashion that you may want to look into is one that is relatively unique.  Each year, thousands of fashions shows take place in the United States. While a select few of those shows are able to make it on the national news, not all are that popular.  Did you know that many local stores and fashion designers have their own local fashions shows?  They do, but many do not realize that they can or have the time to plan a fashion show and this is where you can come in.  You can make money as a fashion show organizer. Fashion show organizers often target local fashion stores and fashion designers to explain the many benefits of having a fashion show to them.  As a fashion show designer, you may be in charge of making the show run well. This often includes booking the fashion show space, designing the stage, hiring the models, and so forth.

As you can see, there are a number of different fashion focused careers or jobs out there for you to choose from. What is even more amazing is that the above mentioned fashion focused careers are just a few of the many that exist.

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s show at Lakme India Fashion Week turned out to be mirthful, thanks to Shahrukh Khan taking on the ramp and talking about sex, among other things.

Who can surpass SRK’s wit and humor when the King Khan is in his elements? On day four of LFW, SRK sashayed the catwalk for the fashion show themed after his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. Put together by his designer friend Manish Malhotra , the show had SRK dressed in black dhoti-pants, black blazer with gold-coloured buttons and, most importantly, the arm sling which was again in black and gold – the colours of KKR.

Trust SRK to not just walk the ramp but also regale the crowd with his witticisms. Among the guests he thanked his team’s coach John Buchanan and also Preity Zinta , who, he joked, had joined KKR.

Shahrukh also joked about some tips he had got before walking the ramp. The superstar enacted it out by sucking in his cheeks, pouting his lips and giving an angry expression like models do, much to everyone’s joy.

SRK even talked about sex when he revealed: “Lubna Adams, (choreographer) told me I look like a fish starved of sex. Fish is okay, but sex? I have a reputation. I am a Khan!” The gag left many giggling and chortling.

The show had celebrities like Hrithik Roshan and Suzzane Roshan, Sridevi with her daughter and husband Boney Kapoor , Kareena Kapoor , Kajol , Tanisha Mukherjee , Genelia D’Souza , who also walked for Manish this time along with Tusshar Kapoor , Arjun Rampal and wife Mehr Jesia.
