So, you now have a number of media relations, stories and hooks that you can present to various media outlets that don’t have a thing to do with celebrities.  Using this approach, you and your fashions are the stars.  This is the approach I suggest focusing on.  Then after you’ve made your splash and established yourself through the media as a hot designer, maybe, just maybe you’ll let one of those celebrities wear them.

Public relations is an important marketing component for nearly any company or product, but when it comes to fashion, beauty or style an effective PR campaign is not an option, it’s a necessity.  Think about it, fashion and style is directly linked in our culture with celebrity and fame.  When Entertainment Tonight or In Style feature the latest singing sensation or movie star, it’s not just the person who is being spotlighted it’s also what he or she is wearing including what bag, jewelry, blouse, pants, skirt, scarf or coat they are sporting at the time.

When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt prance down the red carpet, they’re not the only ones being scrutinized, the magnifying glass is also on their shoes, their blouse, the sunglasses – everything they are wearing is now suddenly in the grip of the star making machine.

A fashion designer we were working with had one of her designs worn by Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson in the same week.  That opened the door to the People magazines and In Style’s of the world.  That is a definite plus.  As a designer you want celebrities to wear your clothing.  It helps media-wise, there is no doubt about that.  But a mistake that designers often make is that they place their primary focus on chasing down celebrities and celebrity stylists thinking that the only way to establish themselves in the world of fashion is to get the latest A, B, C (and if all else fails) D-list celebrity to wear their designs.

As I mentioned, that helps, but your primary job is not to chase down Hollywood’s latest flavor of the month.  Your job is to create the best fashions you can.  You want to develop a line that the public reacts to.  The bottom line is you want your creations to be your star, not the celebrity that wears them.  So, how do you do this?

Here’s your exercise, forget (for a bit) that celebrities exist. Put aside your desire to have the latest celeb wear your designs.  For now, that approach is off the table.  Now, what are your stories?  What makes your designs special?  Who are they created for?  What are some ways that they can be used or worn that is a bit different? What are some interesting visuals that can be used when pitching your fashion story? Is there a story that has to do with how your fashions are made?  Are unique materials used?  Keep drilling down this way.  Focus on what makes your designs unique, different or what makes them perfect for a certain target market.

Now what about you?  What makes your story interesting?  What was your journey to become a designer?  What obstacles did you have to overcome?  How was your life changed by your decision to enter the world of fashion? Realize that your journey and your transformation offers you a wealth of media pitches and approaches.

So, you now have a number of media pitches, stories and hooks that you can present to various media outlets that don’t have a thing to do with celebrities.  Using this approach, you and your fashions are the stars.  This is the approach I suggest focusing on.  Then after you’ve made your splash and established yourself through the media as a hot designer, maybe, just maybe you’ll let one of those celebrities wear them.

Salwar Kameez started as an alternative dress form in Kashmir and Punjab, it has grown in popularity all over India and in all the Muslim countries of the world, especially with younger women. With Celebrities like Goldie hawn, Sally field, Hillary Clinton, Jennifer Lopez and the Late Princess Diana adorning the Salwar Kameez at high profile events, this garment is the clearly the current flavour in the West.Shalwar Kameezs are pajama-like trousers gathered at the waist and ankles, worn underneath a long, loose tunic known as a kameez. ::Some tips on Salwar Kameez:: * The kameez should be a little longer in height. It makes you look taller. If your height is around 5 feet 3 inches then your kameez height should be around 47- 48 inches. * If you have broad shoulders then avoid wearing puffed sleeves. * If you have fat arms and therefore cannot wear sleeveless then go in for sleeves of about 5 inches length. This will hide the flab on your arms and your hands will look thinner. * Salwar Kameez can be worn in many styles. Styles keep changing with Trends. Recently big bottoms were in fashion and now short Kurtas Are back in vogue. * Chudidar looks good on long kameezs or Kurtas. Avoid wearing them on short Kurtas. Chinese collar (closed neck) makes you look tall, but avoid it if you have broad shoulders. * Wear a Salwar Kameez around your naval area, as it will pull in your stomach. * If you have the tie strings on your side, it reduces the look of the paunch. * Tucks might be out of fashion but they give a very good cut to the Kameez. * Avoid Organza or any stiff cloth if you want to look slimmer. * Dark colours like maroon, red, blue or brown look very good on dark women. Basic Tips on Salwar Kameez fashion * Using colour to balance your body is a great idea. Wear light colours where you re small and dark colours where larger. For example, if you have large hips, wear dark skirts or pants and a light coloured blouse. Wearing set-in sleeves with shoulder pads will help you to balance wide hips. The shoulder pads will add to your shoulders therefore balancing with your hips. * Don’t choose clothes that are too tight. Clothes that fit well will make you appear slimmer while tight clothes will only add pounds. * Wear tops or dresses that have a scoop neckline with half or long sleeves to hide heavy arms and draw attention to the face and neck. * Clothes in solid colours with simple lines will make you appear taller. * Always break in new shoes before wearing them out for a special occasion. * Wear straight silhouettes in a solid colour to hide a thick waist. * The skinner the stripe, the thinner you appear. * Don’t wear black on a hot day or at a wedding. * A straight cut skirt and full leg pants will hide large thighs. * To appear shorter, jackets or tops should fall below the hips. * To lengthen your legs wear slim, straight leg pants. * To appear taller and thinner, try a pinstripe suit. * Long sleeves should hit just at the wrist bone. * When you are wearing a white shirt, wear a bra close to your skin colour. * To hide wide hips, try an a-line style dress. * Give a new updated look to an old blouse or jacket by sewing on new buttons. * Pleats add pounds. If you want to look larger through the hips, wear pleats. If you don’t, avoid pleats! If clothes don’t fit, have them altered. If they don’t fit, they’ll remain in the closet. * One of the biggest trends for spring is denim. You can find it in skirts, shorts, jeans, jackets, and shirts and even kurtas. * These are the basics measurements you need to find your correct bra size. With a measuring tape, measure around the torso at the underarm level and under the breasts. If the number is odd, add one to it. For example, if your measurement is 35, your bra size will be 36. Next, measure around your bust at its fullest part. Subtract the bra size from this number. * Pin a safety pin to the inside of your slacks in case of an emergency. If a button comes off or the zipper breaks you will be prepared. * Are your zippers sticking? Rub them with a lead pencil and they will slide smoothly. When you buy an everyday item, try to think of at least three things you already own that you can wear with that item. * Choose your accessories wisely. Accessories can completely change the look of an outfit. Women with larger hips should choose jeans that are generously cut through the hips with a flared leg. * When losing weight, don’t wait to choose wardrobe pieces. Choose pieces that will camouflage problem areas. MY FASHION ADVICE: We gives you a brief idea of what goes with each type of body shape Broad Shoulders Wide necklines, short sleeves and light fabrics help to visually reduce broad shoulders Big Bust line Never wear V-necks and scoop necks as they emphasise the chest size. High Necks work well, combined with full sleeves they work even better. Small Bust line Empire Basques, V-Necks and bulkier fabrics create an illusion of a fuller bust line. Heavy Arms Always wear sleeves that are not fitted yet follow the body line. Avoid heavy and thick fabrics. Heavy Hips It is important not to wear fitted, short garments that emphasise your hips. Instead wear moderately loose and longer lengths in thicker fabrics to give a longer and leaner look Other Tips Rule.No.1 : Accentuate your positives! When searching for clothes, look for sari blouses or tops that enhance your facial features and chest area (but not in a trashy way). Choose flattering colours for your skin tone and accessories (jewellery and hair accessories) that direct a viewer’s attention away from those features that you are self-conscious about. Rule.No.2 : Conceal the negatives! Avoid clothes that draw attention to what you feel are your negative features. For instance, avoid clothing that is too tight — that will overemphasis your features such as tight jeans or lycra tops, light coloured pants / skirts, especially if you favour dark tops. A general rule to follow is the rule that your tops should not be darker than your bottoms. Especially if you are well endowed in the hip area. Another good rule is, at the very least, you should match colours of tops and bottoms. If not, draw attention to the upper waist area by wearing dark coloured (not necessarily black) pants / skirts and vibrant coloured tops, with or without prints. Rule No. 3 : Come out of hiding! Get rid of those clothes that make you feel the most frumpy! Eliminate restricting sari blouses, and baggy pants and T-shirts from your wardrobe! These things tend to draw attention to your physical shape and only serve to make you feel more self-conscious. A more open collared top, maybe a V-neck or a crew neck. Tops that reveal a little shoulder, can make you feel 10 times better. It opens up the area around your face, so that even without makeup, you can feel sexy. If you must have something concealing your neck, try a scarf. Scarves have a tendency to draw attention away from those negative spots and allow others to focus on your beautiful smile. In fact, the shorter the scarf (just slightly bigger than a handkerchief), the foxier you will look and feel. Try sheer / print scarves…very soft and feminine. Rule No. 4 : If it makes you feel frumpy…don’t wear it! If you feel self-conscious, you can’t feel comfortable and much less, sexy. First of all — find a style you are comfortable with. If you wear Salwar Kamee (which one admits are very comfortable), forget fabrics with writing, etc., on them. Find fabrics with solid colours or with complimentary patterns on them. The kameez should be long enough to cover those ‘trouble spots’. When choosing a style, they should not be constricting or too clingy. There should still be room to breathe, although not too baggy. Rule No. 5 : Take your time and take a friend When shopping, take the time to try on clothes before you leave the store. Take a friend along who can be objective in helping you find clothes to compliment your shape. If ‘sexy’ or ‘foxy’ is what you’re looking for, why not bring your spouse along? Put on a little fashion show in the changing booth area for your significant other. Who said shopping should not be fun for your other half. An understanding and loving partner will be supportive and may aid you in finding outfits (party clothes, lingerie) that you feel comfortable in and that you both find sexy. Once again…be honest with yourself. If it makes you feel frumpy, don’t buy it! Don’t waste your valuable fashion money, and valuable closet space on clothes that you wear once and then never again. Take your time. Keep in mind, no matter what your size, clothing should be functional, yet comfortable. Your clothes should compliment you. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little…a print here, a little bright colour there…Pastels look good on just about anyone. They give your shape a softer look, regardless of your size. You don’t have to look frumpy anymore! Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable, but accentuate your positives and conceal your negatives. TheHeer on Fashion Flaws You will be considered beautiful not only by your features but by the way you dresses, by the way you present yourself, by your confidence and your style. If you have mastered all these then you have a very lethal combination and you will be able to rule the world by your beauty and charm. However we often make certain fashion mistakes which though according to us doesn’t matter but infect these mistakes affect your sense of fashion and style immensely. Wearing the Wrong Colours This is one of the biggest fashion mistakes that you can commit. Just remember one thing that all colours don’t suit your skin tone. The colour that looks great on your colleague or the actress you saw in the soap might not look great on you. Infact it might look the contrary. Therefore you have to learn to recognise which colour suits you and also the profession to which you are associated. Experiment with different colours and stick with the palettes that look best on you, regardless of what’s hot and happening. Don’t waste your money on clothes that make you look pale and ugly. Inapt makeup Proper Makeup is an important aspect of fashion. For every occasion you require an appropriate makeup i.e., light for day, heavier for evening, sheer for sports etc. You wear different clothes for different activities in you life; similarly your makeup should change as per occasion. Rundown foot wears
http://indianfashiondress.blogspot.com/2010/10/indian-fashion-designers.html
You will look complete only if you are dressed appropriately from top to bottom. Therefore even your shoes should be appropriate for the occasion and should go with your dress. Don’t wear shabby, unpolished and rundown shoes. Polish them regularly. Use a felt tip marker on scuffs, and put a piece of soft carpet under your feet when you drive. And most importantly, invest in a good pair if you’re going to wear them every day. Spend on your shoes that will give you comfort and will look great on you. Dont Wear a size too small If it doesn’t fit, don’t wear it. Squeezing into a size that is too tight for you may feed your vanity, but it will make you appear overfed to everyone else. If the dress you are wearing is not comfortable and you cant sit or walk properly then it is not going to make you feel beautiful at all and you are definitely not going to look your best. Then why put yourself through that kind of torture? Find clothes that fit or have them tailored to fit and look your best. Visible bra lines Make sure your bra fits you properly. It is very embarrassing if your bra’s show or it rides up in the back. Similarly get bra’s that fit you properly. If your breasts sag then it’s very clear that you are not using proper bra and it’s time to seek professional help. Slips that show The next fashion mistake will be letting your slip show from under your skirt. Don’t use the same slip for all dresses coz it might not be proper for all. Buy slips in several lengths and replace them once the elastic wears. For the most discreet linings, buy slips in the colours you wear most often, like black, navy, beige, and white. Smelling awful There are some people who smell terrible despite using good perfumes. Drink plenty of water and eat lots of fresh fruits and green salads. Buy deodorant that works with your body. You may have to try a few to find the best one for you, and you may need to change every now and again if your chemistry changes, like after having a baby, starting new medication, going through menopause, or the like. Broken nails, chipped polish Manicure is a must. Keep your nails clean and evenly trimmed. http://indianfashiondress.blogspot.com/2010/10/indian-fashion-designers.html

Always have clippers and a nail file in your purse and desk at work for emergencies. In Mark Oser’s world, light is art, and the most important design element in a house. A trained painter, he prefers white walls to showcase canvases and sculptures, and dramatic lighting to highlight the architectural details of his 6,000-square-foot modern home in Holland.

It’s not your typical Bucks County fare, but that’s not why clients in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida call on Oser, an interior designer for 20 years who now does many design/build projects.

His own home features glass for staircases, stainless steel for curved walls, granite for floors, and open spaces for paintings that make it feel like a modern museum or a slick movie set. A comfortable one, though.

“My main goal was to create an ultramodern [house], but warm at the same time,” says Oser, 44. “I softened all of the hard materials with warm lighting, thick carpets, and warm touches of color.”

Building his home from the ground up was a challenge, Oser says: “I have been exposed to so much over the past 20 years and had so many resources that I loved to use. How do I narrow it down to what I like?”

First, he had to find where to build. He wanted to be in Bucks County, but he didn’t think a big development would be right for him, his wife Lisa, and daughter Halie, now 9. He found a community of 10 homes where the builder would allow him to design and construct the interior.

Like the rest of us, Oser had to contend with that awful word budget.

“When I thought about all of the things I wanted in this house, I thought, ‘I can’t afford myself.’ If there was something I wanted that I could not afford, I tried to do it with more cost-effective materials.”

]]>

It took Oser a year to design the whole house and another year, after they moved in in May 2001, to design the lower level. He bounced ideas off his wife, who was involved in the projects.

“My most important requirement was that my home feel inviting while being warm – modern design sometimes has a cold feel to it. Mark blended a modern style with a sense of warmth,” Lisa Oser says, crediting his use of lighting with making that happen.

The basement that took so long to design? It features a six-seat theater with ticket booth, a bar, a seating area, a gaming area, and the requisite home gym. The rooms have a movie theme, and there is even a life-sized clay sculpture of a movie attendant in the ticket booth.

The soundproof theater has fabric walls and dramatic sconces, and a 125-inch movie screen behind remote-controlled curtains.

“This is my favorite room,” Mark Oser says, “because you feel so different here. It takes me away.”

“You can do anything using this screen: show family photos, play games, and watch movies, of course,” says Oser, who often hooks up his computer and works there.

Adds Lisa Oser: “My friends and Halie’s love this house. It is really set up for entertaining.”

The bar and seating area have fun pop-art touches such as puzzle-piece ottomans and chairs done in fabric that looks like film reels. Oser painted an “Al Pacino in Scarface” movie mural onto the wall near the pool table.

Upstairs, in the main living spaces, however, “I wanted to have an art gallery effect,” says Oser, who mixes his own work – his take on a Roy Lichtenstein is on one wall – with that of other artists.

For the kitchen, he wanted sleek and angular mixed with curved design elements. The granite floors match the countertops, and white custom cabinets conceal small appliances. The eating area has a Jetsons-like triangular table and colorful seats.

In the square family room, Mark Oser wanted curves. He created them with flooring cut in a wave shape. The room features a built-in TV over the fireplace and, on an opposite wall, an airbrushed sky effect with the words COOL in 3-D.

“Paint can be changed, so if I get tired of it, I can easily change it,” he says.

The master bedroom needed lots of storage. Oser tucked it away behind curved brushed-steel and lacquer custom cabinetry that looks like an architectural element. A fireplace and TV are built into a wall opposite the bed, which rests on a glass-block base, lit from within.

“The lighting and glass create a floating effect,” Oser says.

He painted the molded ceiling a warmer color than the walls, and tucked away cove lighting to give the space a wonderful glow. And he created a meditation area for his wife, who owns an insurance-brokerage agency.

Three years ago, Oser took his talents outside, adding a pool that transports visitors to his favorite state, Florida. He brought in sand from the beach and palmlike trees, worked his magic with lighting again, and dotted deck areas with art and sculpture from favorite artists.

“The best part of living in a modern house is it is open and airy, unique and timeless,” Lisa Oser says. “I feel like I am on vacation in Florida or California in my own home.”

Mark also thinks of it as a living portfolio.

“I could have a showroom,” he says, “but I choose to live in mine.”

Fashion designers are the merchants of the fashion industry. They are the ones who live and breathe fashion everyday to make trends and new designs. They are the creative geniuses who foresee and even dictate what people will be wearing next. While what we usually here in the catwalks are big European names, it is undeniable that a lot of American designers have also marked their names not just in the clothes they sell, but in the fashion industry in general.

In no particular order, here are some of the great American fashion designers who have earned great respect and adoration in the world of fashion.

• Ralph Lauren. Who would not know his Polo collection? Most of the people have one or even more of his classic Polo shirts. There are about 35 boutiques all over US, and his success has already spread the world over. He is now a leading international designer who is well-respected in the fashion world, and is in fact, a subject of several biographies.

• Marc Jacobs.

He is an American designer who has his own line, but is popularly known for his work at the French fashion house Louis Vuitton as its Creative Director. Part of his notoriety is his peculiar choices of advertising models like the young actress Dakota Fanning and the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u.

• Vera Wang. Her name is closely related to Hollywood. She is usually associated with wedding gowns, and gets regularly mentioned in pop TV shows. Among the celebrities she has made wedding gowns for are Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Avril Lavigne and others. Apart from her trademark wedding dresses, she has expanded her lines to include fragrances, jewelry, shoes, eyewear and house ware collections.

Vera Wang has Chinese descent but was raised and is currently based in New York City.

• Donna Karan. This designer is the famed creator of the clothing label, DKNY or Donna Karan New York. Her first store opened in 1999 in Madison Avenue, and now has spread all over different cities in the world such as Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Beirut, Cancun, etc. Over the years, she has also developed a number of fragrances that are loved by both men and women. With several awards under her belt, Donna Karan has truly become a big name in fashion.

• Anna Sui. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Sui has already taken interest in fashion at a very young age. She eventually attended Parsons School of Design and now, she has become a global brand. She is even included in Time Magazine’s top five fashion icons of the decade. Sui has also ventured into children’s lines, fragrances, shoes, cosmetics and accessories. Her celebrity clients include Paris Hilton, Maria Sharapova, Sofia Coppola, Naomi Campbell, among others.

Alber Elbaz is not your typical fashion designer. Not only does he look a bit different than most fashion designers, his life has also not been spent in the glitz and glamour of Paris until he became one of the world’s best fashion designers.

You see, Alber Elbaz was born in the city of Casablanca in Morocco, in 1961. His whole family emigrated to Israel when Alber was 10, and he grow up in the working class neighborhoods of the city of Holon. After having served in the army, he studied at Israel’s finest design school – Shenkar College of Engineering and Design and moved to New York City in 1987. He worked for a manufacturer of typical “mother-of-the-bride clothing” in New York for around 2 years, and then moved on to Geoffrey Beene, where he worked for 7 years. This was his stepping stone to the big league. Alber Elbaz worked for Guy Laroche between 1997-1998 and for Yves Saint Laurent, before being hired as the artistic director for the fashion house of Lanvin in 2001.

He made the brand Lanvin into the success it is today, and branded himself and his designs as some of the best right now. Many Hollywood celebrities, as well as socialites and other fashionistas constantly wear his designs, and something tells me Alber Elbaz still has more to give.

He lives with his partner Alex Koo who is also Lanvin’s director of marketing and is reportedly shy and right on trend. He has been involved in several very modern and hip collaborations during his time at Lanvin, including one with Swedish denim brand Acne.

Listen to your heart, Lol not to should corney. You’re only a freshmen so you have some time! Good luck sweetie.

What do you think? Answer below!

The world of fashion was dominated in the 20th century by French and Italian designers. With incredible imagination, with daring attitude and undeniable flair, all of them were obsessed by enduring elegance.

The most influential designers left an individual mark, made a statement, changed the norms, and created an identifiable style; in the process they redefined the image of the modern woman and paid her tribute.

Driven by enormous energy and inflated egos, but most importantly blessed with talent and originality, their craftsmanship was impeccable. Authentic in their creations those giants of haute couture dictated fashion trends and imposed a style that will endure time.

COCO CHANEL. The fascinating world of high fashion begins with Coco Chanel whose name alone conveys prestige, impeccable quality, unique taste and unmistakable style. As early as the 1924 she was setting trends for women of all ages, instituting what will be later called “haute couture”.

Her design was simple, practical and sophisticated all at the same time.

After her success with Chanel nr. 5, she was well established and in 1926 her “little black dress” was the new and definite stone marker of her career.

She introduced the jersey suite, the chemise, the pleated skirt, the turtleneck sweater and the strapless dress.

Coco Chanel started the pants revolution and the craze for bobbed hair style using the philosophy “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise is not luxury” as well as another famous quote “elegance is refusal”. She firmly believed that “a woman has the age she deserves” and that every time a woman leaves the house she should “be prepared to eventually meet destiny that day”.

Convinced that “fashion is architecture and a matter of proportion” she dressed some of the most beautiful women of her time, from Marlene Dietrich to Ingrid Bergman and Princess Grace.

Her style of simple elegance never changed much with time and it is easily recognizable. Since taking over the House of Chanel, designer Karl Lagerfeld kept the image of distinguished elegance.

CRISTOBAL BALENCIAGA known as “The Master” was the only Spanish giant in the fashion world dominated by French and Italian designers. His first store opened in San Sebastian in 1919 and was followed soon after by stores in Madrid and Barcelona. Eventually he moved to Paris, the undisputed capital of the fashion world and he was known both

as a designer (anticipating trends) and a craftsman obsessed with perfection.

He was seeking simple essence, elegance and simplicity. His most productive era was the ’50 when Balenciaga introduced the “sack” dress and the “Baby Doll look”. His preference was for deep black and rich brown colors. Young and talented designers as Givenchy and Emanuel Ungaro regarded him as their mentor.

NINA RICCI. After working most of her life for other designers, Italian born Nina Ricci found fame and fortune in Paris when she opened her own fashion house in 1932 at the age of 50. She created elegant, sophisticated dresses in classic style that addressed a specific need of the older Parisian high society woman.

Her strength was in discovering and highlighting the personality of her clients rather than trying to fit them into the dress already created.

She favored refined femininity at a time when Coco Chanel was the dominating force of the high fashion and boyish styles were being celebrated.

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO was a leader in the shoes industry for more than 70 years. As a very young boy he immigrated to United States and made imaginative, but also absolutely comfortable shoes for Hollywood stars as Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn.

In 1927 he returned to Italy and introduced innovative materials as raffia and jersey, Bakelite heels, wooden soles and in 1937 the most famous invention of them all – the cork wedge. He is also the father of stiletto heel and platform shoe introduced in 1947, only to be revived in the ’70 and than again in the early 2000.

CHRISTIAN DIOR was considered a national treasure by French women and fashion authorities of the time. He was more interested in perfumes and cologne at the beginning of his career, until he come in contact with Yves Saint Laurent and together created the “New look” presented at a fashion show in 1947.

Through his designs he imposed opulence as a rebellion against the austerity of the war era; the fitted jacket, the full calf length skirt was his first statement, followed by evermore extravagant designs. Some of his dresses will use up to 80 yards of fabric, most of them 35 to 60. His rounded shoulders, small waist, wide skirts and little hats made the trade mark of the “Dior woman”. A few short years later Dior presented the “Second look” characterized by a loose fitting shape, elongate torso, narrow shoulders and triangular shapes.

EMILIO PUCCI was born into a Neapolitan aristocratic family. He was the first member of his family to actually work in over 1000 years, so in order to spear additional embarrassment to his noble and reluctant family, he signed his collection simply as Emilio. In 1949 he opened his first boutique and introduced the “Capri pants” which took the world by storm. In the ’50 he gained a reputation as a brilliant designer of patterned sport wear and relaxed daywear, creating a line of light weight, wrinkle free, comfortable dresses.

YVES SAINT LAURENT was the creative force at the House of Dior and after the death of Christian Dior in 1957 he took over and imposed a new and personal style. His first collection called “The trapeze” was very successful and his talent was credited with the imposition of the triangular shape and the “bubble dress”. His sense of practicality and a desire for new energy made him abandon the dreamy, romantic, overly sophisticated Dior woman for a more dynamic one; the length of the dress was just below the knee but the shoulders remained narrow.

BILL BLASS study fashion in New York in the late ’40. His name will always be associated with true American fashion; modern, practical, tailored clothing. Most of his designs went into mass production, but some exclusive ones were made for First Ladies Nancy Regan and Barbara Bush, as well as Barbara Streisand and Barbara Walters.

GUCCI made his contribution to the high fashion industry by bringing accessories to a status of elegant necessities. His passion was leather goods, from handbags to shoes and luggage; later on he extended his influence to watches, jewelry, silk scarves, ties, eyeglasses, perfumes and cologne for men and women alike. Many celebrities as Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy will happily display a Gucci bag as the ultimate touch of elegance.

EMANUEL UNGARO was a follower of Balenciaga, but developed a personal style by accepting the changes of the time in terms of practicality and the sense of independence that the new woman was displaying with a renewed confidence. His trade mark is the printed patterns and bold colors and he said more than once “my dresses speak for themselves”. Ungaro is also known for high quality perfumes and cologne.

VALENTINO emphasized the feminine style and accentuated the delicate side of every woman, her liberated spirit. In 1960 he introduced the gypsy look with the full skirt, mixed prints, knotted fringes, making it an inspiration for the hippy era. A new collection presented in 1962 was called “No color” and every single dress was a shade of white, cream, sand, ecru and beige. His biggest contribution to the world of fashion was the introduction of the first “pret-a-porter” (ready to wear) line in 1969.

The success was immediate, but Valentino’s ego was not satisfied; his heart was forever in high fashion, his dream was to capture the imagination of the very rich and very famous, the most beautiful women of our times. In the early ’80 he went back to luxury and sophistication, his designs become characterized by puffed sleeves and ruffles intended to balance tight bodices; light and ethereal fabrics were used adding mystic to a translucent look.

His dresses are not only romantic, youthful and beautiful, they are also impeccably made. The king of the red carpet, Valentino designed the wedding dress for many celebrities, including Jacky Kennedy (when she married Onassis), Claudia Schaffer and Jennifer Lopez.

Princess Diane, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and many other legends enjoyed his unique sense of beauty; his quotation “I design energy not dresses” explains best his enormous success.

ANNE KLEIN: for the American fashion world she created a line of simple, smart and practical clothes with the working woman in mind. In 1948 she opened her firm with a junior line and in 1967 Anne Klein patented the girdle especially designed for mini-skirt wearers.

CHRISTIAN LACROIX worked initially for the Hermes House and his creation were easily recognizable because of the bright color combination. The look was predominantly layered. His design of raffles, frills and lace ornate with gems, provided a cheery alternative to the sedate and sober creation of his colleges in the fashion world.

MISSONI made a distinctive mark in the fashion world by creating colorful patterns of stripes knit wear. Instantly identifiable as a unique style the House of Missoni uses many different fabrics such as wool, cotton, linen and silk in over 40 colors and shades. In time their artistry expended into tapestry and carpet design and more recently opened a chain of hotels.

BENETTON is competing in the knit wear segment of the fashion industry and the trade mark is a youthful, hip style full of colors and patterns. Their creation resembles the use of colors of the Missoni fashion, their advertisement approach is one of global diversity where acceptance and tolerance is celebrated.

DONNA KARAN started her career at Anne Klein and her contribution made the company the most profitable sport wear line in United State in the ’70. In 1985 Donna Karan started her own label and in 1988 presented DKNY a mix and mach collection of coordinated working outfits that combined simplicity with comfort. She designed wrapped and draped garments in a sexy but controlled way, attractive but not too alluring.

Donna Karan casual chic is a classic fashion statement with a twist of modern flair. Influenced by Armani her style is sober with minimum ornamentation and sparing use of jewelry and accessories, her colors are predominantly sober.

GIANNI VERSACE started his career in 1978 with a pret-a-porter collection and opened his first boutique in Rome. His dresses had a distinctive cut, vibrant prints and the materials used were unconventional. His mark in the world of fashion is made by striking colors and fabrics, by daring cuts that took a sexy look all the way to vulgarity. His fame and fortune was made mostly in home furnishing, accessories and fragrances.

After his death, sister Donatella took over a declining business and struggled to meet the fashion’s industry expectations.

CALVINE KLEIN was born in Brooklyn in the late ’40. He started by designing a ready to wear sport line for men with a clean look and spare shapes. His fashion is simple and effective, his name associated with jeans and underwear. His advertisement campaign is at time too daring and pushing the limits of good taste and decency. Like many other designers before him Calvin Klein launched perfumes that become household world fragrances.

GIORGIO ARMANI is the most influential modern Italian designer with immediate and recognizable impact. In 1974 he entered the fashion arena and introduced his menswear collection and a year later his women collection followed by “Armani Junior”. He expended his design by creating accessories and fragrances. In 1981 a new, more affordable line was launched known as “Emporium Armani” and “Armani Jeans” bringing his enterprise to over 1 billion dollars in sales.

His clothes are practical, yet sophisticated, understated and wearable. The typical Armani colors are washed out grays, sand and nuances of olive and he never uses prints. He is no doubt a fashion aristocrat with immediately identifiable flair and style recognition.

10. Elsa Schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli (10 September 1890 — 13 November 1973) was an Italian fashion designer. Along with Coco Chanel, her greatest rival, she is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in fashion between the two World Wars. Starting with knitwear, Schiaparelli’s designs were heavily influenced by Surrealists like her collaborators Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti. Her clients included the heiress Daisy Fellowes and actress Mae West.  Schiaparelli did not adapt to the changes in fashion following World War II and her business closed in 1954. Schiaparelli was an innovative woman and fashion designer. She had a lot of “firsts” in the fashion industry. Her career began with her introduction of graphic knitwear to the world of fashion with knit patterns and emblems. These led to her fanciful prints of body parts, food, and many more unusual themes. She was the first to use brightly colored zippers, appearing first on her sportswear in 1930 and again five years later on her evening dresses. Not only was she the first to use brightly colored zippers, but she was also the first to have them dyed to match the material used in her garments. She was the first to create and use fanciful buttons that looked more like broaches. They came in the shapes of peanuts, bees, and even ram’s heads. In Parisian fashion, she invented culottes, introduced Arab breeches, embroidered shirts, wrapped turbans, pompom-rimmed hats, barbaric belts, the “wedge,” a soled she that would trend through the 20th century and into the next, and mix-and-match sportswear, the concept of which would not be fully recognized for another forty to fifty years. While her innovations in fashion design were numerous, it was her creation of the runway show as we know it today that was most influential. Her modern idea of a fashion show included a runway with music and art, and the use of elongated, shapeless women as models. She believed that this boyish figure would best display the clothing. Many people do not realize the true sum of her impact on fashion and the fashion industry. -Wikipedia.org

9. Christian Dior

Christian Dior (21 January 1905, Granville, Manche – 24 October 1957), was an influential French fashion designer, best known as the founder of one of the world’s top fashion houses, also called Christian Dior. The actual name of the line of his first collection, presented in early 1947, was Corolle (literally the botanical term corolla or circlet of flower petals in English), but the phrase New Look was coined for it by Carmel Snow, the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar. Dior’s designs were more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations on fabric. He was a master at creating shapes and silhouettes; Dior is quoted as saying “I have designed flower women.” His look employed fabrics lined predominantly with percale, boned, bustier-style bodices, hip padding, wasp-waisted corsets and petticoats that made his dresses flare out from the waist, giving his models a very curvaceous form. The hem of the skirt was very flattering on the calves and ankles, creating a beautiful silhouette. Initially, women protested because his designs covered up their legs, which they had been unused to because of the previous limitations on fabric. There was also some backlash to Dior’s designs form due to the amount of fabrics used in a single dress or suit—during one photo shoot in a Paris market, the models were attacked by female vendors over the profligacy of their dresses—but opposition ceased as the wartime shortages ended. The New Look revolutionized women’s dress and reestablished Paris as the center of the fashion world after World War II. -Wikipedia.org
